She's fallen in love with the Rays

I am 76 years young, I grew up with 6 brothers who all played baseball, and since the time I was 5 years old until I got married, it was Sunday Mass, dinner, and the baseball game.

I haven’t followed baseball in years and years. On April 1, I slipped and fell in the gym, and tore 90% of my achilles tendon, had surgery and will be in a cast several more weeks. I rarely watch T.V., but was very bored one night, so joined my husband in the den to watch the Rays. That night I fell in love with the Rays, and I want them to know that they have made my injury bearable. I never miss a game, and even subscribed to the St. Petersburg Times so I could read all about them.

I am looking forward to walking again so I can go to see a game in person. Keep up the good work, and know that I am praying for each one of you and Coach Maddon every night. God bless all of you.

Celeste C. Spoon, Brooksville

I Write This, Also, For All Of Our Many New Readers

I was born in Brooklyn l920 and I often would take a

trolley or walk to Ebbets Field to see the Brooklyn

Dodgers play.  One day they were playing the Chicago

Cubs and they Cubs were leading 6 to 2 in the 5th

inning, the Dodgers loaded the bases and Casey

Stengel sent Babe Phelps up to the plate to pinch hit.

Phelps hit a homer to tie the game 6-6.  In the 9th

inning, again, the Cubs were leading 9-6 and, again,

the Brooklyn Dodgers loaded the bases with two out.

Casey Stengel sent Johnny Fredericks up to the plate

to pinch hit and Fredericks struck out.  As all the fans

started to walk slowly and sadly out of Ebbets Field,

a burly, heavy man walking a few feet ahead of me

saw Mgr. Casey Stengel talking to one of his coaches.

The fan shouted, "Hey, Casey, you big bum.  Why did

you waste Phelps in the 5th inning?"  God bless.

I have Written This Story Before. I Write It Again For All----

I have written this story before.  I write it again for all

new readers.  Many baseball players make the sign of

cross when they come up to the plate to bat.  They make

the sign of the cross and pray that they are not hit by

a pitched ball.  When Casey Stengel was manager of

the old Brooklyn Dodgers, this is what he told his

baseball players on his team.  "When you come up to

bat, I don't want you to make the sign of the cross.

Instead of making the sign of the cross, you can say a

prayer that you do not get hit with a pitched ball.  If

you make the sign of the cross and, then, you get hit

with a pitched ball, you make God look bad."  God

bless.

You Look Motherly And That Reminds Me Of A Story.

When the great pitcher of the Cleveland Indians, Early

Wynn, was inducted into the Hall of Fame, a reporter

said, "Early, you owned the inside of the plate.  If a

batter crowded the plate, your first pitch would brush

him back.  If he crowded the plate after that first inside

pitch, the second pitch would hit him on he hip or

upper leg.  You were a control pitcher.  Yet, you have

hit more batters than any other pitcher in history.  Is

it true, Early, that if your mother crowded the plate,

you would hit her in the hip or leg with your second

pitch?" Early replied, "Yes, I would hit my mother with

a second pitch, but you must remember, Mom was a

pretty good hitter."  God bless.

I Hope Your Rays Win A World Seriers This Year.

The Red Sox did not win a World

Series for 84 years.  They won

in l9l8 and, then, they did not

win another World Series until

2004.  Let us see, you are 76.

If the Rays do not win a World

Series in 84 years, you will be

l60 years old.  Sorry, Celeste,

it will be close, but you will not

make it.  God bless.

Jimmy Foxx became my baseball idol in l929.

Jimmy Foxx of the old Phila. As.

became my baseball idol in l929

when I was 9 years old.  Jimmy

was sold to the Boston Red Sox

l936.  Jimmy hit 58 homers for

the As. in l932 and 50 homers

for the Red Sox in l938.  Oddly,

he hit 42 at home in l938 and

only 8 on the road.  Jimmy was

a heavy drinker.  He died in

Fla., choking on a piece of meat.

Many excessive drinkers die this

way.  I would suspect that

Jimmy did not drink too much

when he was with his wife at

home, and he drank much too

much while on the road.  That

would account for the disparity

in homers at home and on the

road.  Jimmy is now in heaven

with another idol of mine, Ted

Williams.  Enjoy your Rays as

much as I enjoyed Ted and

Jimmy and the Red Sockers.

God bless.
